Diving Shark Island

Why Dive With Shark Island?

Home to Various Shark Species – Expect to see tiger sharks, thresher sharks, hammerhead sharks, and silvertip sharks all in one dive.

Strong Currents, High-Adrenaline Drift Dives – Due to the deep-water location and strong currents, this dive is best suited for experienced divers.

Untouched Marine Environment – Since Shark Island is relatively remote and not crowded with divers, it offers pristine coral reefs and an abundance of fish life.

Frequent Oceanic Manta & Whale Shark Sightings – Aside from sharks, lucky divers may encounter oceanic manta rays and whale sharks cruising in the blue.

The Secrets Behind Fuvahmulah’s Marine Wonderland

Unlike most Maldivian atolls, Fuvahmulah is a single, deep-sea island with no surrounding lagoons. That means the ocean floor drops dramatically straight into the depths of the sea just a few hundred meters offshore. This deep-water access creates the perfect environment for large pelagic species—sharks, rays, and other large fish that usually roam the open ocean.

But why do divers flock to Fuvahmula? The resident tiger sharks. Unlike in most places where tiger shark encounters are rare and seasonal, Fuvahmulah’s population is year-round. Local dive operator Shark Island Divers has built a strong, sustainable relationship with these massive creatures, offering divers the rare opportunity to observe them up close and personal.

What is it Like to Dive with Tiger Sharks in Fuvahmulah?

Picture this: You drop into the crystal-clear warm waters, and within minutes, a large shadow emerges from the deep, then another!  Suddenly, you’re surrounded by 15-foot-long tiger sharks, casually swimming past as if you’re just another fish in the sea.

There’s no cage, no feedings—just controlled, awe-inspiring experiences with one of the ocean’s most misunderstood predators.

But don’t worry—these sharks aren’t here for you. Thanks to local conservation efforts, they associate divers with a safe presence, making Fuvahmulah one of the few places on Earth where divers can interact with them in such a natural and safe way.

Is Fuvahmulah Diving Safe?

Despite diving with some of the ocean’s top predators, safety is our top priority at Shark Island Divers. Our local dive guides are some of the most experienced in the world when it comes to handling shark encounters, and strict guidelines ensure both divers and marine life are protected.

But this is an advanced dive destination. The currents can be strong, the dives can be deep, and proper training is a must. If you’re not already Advanced Open Water certified, you’ll want to level up before booking a trip.

Beyond the Sharks: What Else Can You See?

If diving with tiger sharks isn’t enough to get your adrenaline pumping, Fuvahmulah has so much more to offer:

🐋
Hammerhead Alley – A deep, early morning dive where you have the chance to see schooling scalloped hammerhead sharks emerging from the blue.

🦈
Thresher Shark Encounters – Unlike most places where thresher sharks are deep-water and elusive, here they can be seen at recreational diving depths.

🛥️
Pelagic Manta Rays – Unlike reef mantas, these giants are ocean wanderers that can reach up to 7 meters (23 feet) across.

🐠
Incredible Coral and Fish Life – Fuvahmulah isn’t just about big predators; the reefs here are bursting with color, thanks to the pristine conditions and strong currents bringing in nutrients.
